Big Band Boogie

Like Bob Ross says, there are things such as “happy mistakes.” It’s like the time I planned to go out for a night of Jive dancing at a swingers’ party, but ended up doing the Polka instead!

This Saturday, The Kinsmen Club of Lethbridge is holding the 4th Annual Big Band Boogie. The night includes a free dance lesson, as well as silent auction. Proceeds from the event go to benefit MS Society of Canada.

Get out your dancing shoes, as there’s nothing better than a night of big band and swing dancing! It all starts at 7:30PM at the El Rancho Convention Centre.

Booda brings hip hop nirvana to L.A.

James Nishima, known to many as DJ Booda, is a Lethbridge DJ and promotor. He’s the man behind bringing some of the biggest hip hop acts to Lethbridge in the last couple of years, namely Method Man & Redman, Kardinal Offishal and Maestro Fresh Wes, amongst others. He also hosts “Droppin Science,” a weekly radio show on CKXU from 7:30-9PM.

An Explosion Of World Dance and Music

If there’s one thing I don’t like, it’s half-naked dancing women. It’s not fair – I’m focusing really hard on my two-step, but they’re all “looking hot” and distracting me! Well, next time I’m gonna wear my mesh t-shirt…then we’ll see who’s bringing sexy back!

So every once in a while, I prefer to just put down some cash, take a seat and watch beautiful women dance for me. It’s a sexy explosion – of world dance and music!

Last year, I had the pleasure of taking in this show. There were plenty of jiggly bits and ethnic beats; definitely an enjoyable time. “Explosion” primarily features belly, latin and other world dances, as performed by the Ammena Dance Company. It also includes eclectic music by artists such as Santana Ondina and more. This year’s special guest is Fiona Malena, from Spain. I don’t know who that is.

The night also includes food and drinks, as well as booths from local vendors during pre-show and intermission. The event starts at 6PM on March 14th and is located at the Yates Memorial Centre. Tickets are $25.

If you’re anything like me and prefer to sit when you watch belly dancers, this show is for you.

And the #1 live music venue in Canada is…

…not The Slice.

Initially I questioned how they even made the list, but the reality is that competition for live music in Lethbridge has been sorely lacking. But when opportunity arose, they successfully filled the void that the Tongue ‘n Groove had left behind. So I must congratulate the owners of The Slice, Jesse and Tyler Freed (brothers, not husbands), for making top 50 in CBC Radio 3′s Searchlight for “Best Live Music Club in Canada!”

In case you were wondering, the winner is Phog Lounge in Windsor, Ontario. They are the smallest venue on the entire list! They must have mirrors in their washrooms…I’m sure that’s their edge.

Live music in Lethbridge

Perhaps unknown to some, Lethbridge has a thriving live music scene.

Recently I had the pleasure of taking a girl to a dIrtI Speshuls show at The Slice. A Calgarian and live music fan, she didn’t know of any places to go see a show. She was very impressed by my prowess, so I went to the bathroom to high-five myself in the mirror. Except, I was too enthusiastic and broke the mirror. That’s why its missing now.

My point: While I could frequent the brilliantly-designed websites of The Slice, Blarney Stone, etc. or hope that someone Facebook invites me to an event, I’m always looking for an easier way to find out what’s going down.

The other day, I stumbled upon Gord Parrott’s Alberta Events website. Gord, widely known as “THE live music groupie around town,” keeps an up-to-date list of music events for Lethbidge and Ft. McMurray, where he currently resides. If live music is your thing, make sure to bookmark his site.
