I just got word from Karla that the University of Lethbridge Film Club has launched their website. I mentioned the ULFC last week, noting they offer free film screenings for not just students, but the public too. Check out their calendar to see what’s showing next and join the online discussion.

An Explosion Of World Dance and Music
If there’s one thing I don’t like, it’s half-naked dancing women. It’s not fair – I’m focusing really hard on my two-step, but they’re all “looking hot” and distracting me! Well, next time I’m gonna wear my mesh t-shirt…then we’ll see who’s bringing sexy back!
So every once in a while, I prefer to just put down some cash, take a seat and watch beautiful women dance for me. It’s a sexy explosion – of world dance and music!
Last year, I had the pleasure of taking in this show. There were plenty of jiggly bits and ethnic beats; definitely an enjoyable time. “Explosion” primarily features belly, latin and other world dances, as performed by the Ammena Dance Company. It also includes eclectic music by artists such as Santana Ondina and more. This year’s special guest is Fiona Malena, from Spain. I don’t know who that is.
The night also includes food and drinks, as well as booths from local vendors during pre-show and intermission. The event starts at 6PM on March 14th and is located at the Yates Memorial Centre. Tickets are $25.
If you’re anything like me and prefer to sit when you watch belly dancers, this show is for you.

Sunday is International Women’s Day 2009
This Sunday, show the women in your life how important they are by celebrating International Women’s Day. Across the world, men show their appreciation by giving flowers and thanking their mothers, sisters, daughters and any others who have made an impact on their being.
Canada’s theme for International Women’s Day 2009 is Strong Leadership. Strong Women. Strong World: Equality.
8 March 2009 marks the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day, and offers a valuable opportunity to celebrate past accomplishments and gains; pay tribute to current efforts; and focus on the challenges that still lie ahead in working towards equality, justice, peace and development for women.
An event titled “Celebrate Our Voice – Women’s Stories” will be held 9AM to 2PM on March 7 at the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization, hosted by the Lethbridge & District YWCA.
Celebrate black history tonight
THE DEBUT is supposedly Lethbridge’s first celebration for Black History Month. The show is a commemoration of traditional and contemporary fashion and will include performances, giveaways and “more surprises throughout the night!”
It all begins at 7PM in the University of Lethbridge ballroom (adjacent to The Zoo) and tickets are $8 at the door. Best dressed will win $70 cash. There will also be an after-party at Studio 54, so look sharp and get crunk!

CKXU broadcasts “7th Annual Homelessness Marathon”
CKXU 88.3 FM, Southern Alberta’s only campus-community radio station, will be broadcasting live the “Homelessness Marathon: Radio Reflecting on Ending Homelessness Tomorrow.“
The Homelessness Marathon is an annual 14-hour radio broadcast featuring the voices and stories of homeless people. The Homelessness Marathon features live call-ins all night long via a national toll-free number (1-866-594-7729).
This year’s Homelessness Marathon will broadcast live from the streets of Montreal on Monday, February 23rd, starting at sunset and running all night long until sunrise on Tuesday, February 24th.
The seventh annual Homelessness Marathon will once again serve up 14 hours of people-powered radio, broadcasting this year from outside of the Native Friendship Center. With the goal of being a consciousness-raising event, the Marathon will provide an opportunity for homeless people and their supporters to take to the airwaves, and allow a nationwide discussion on homelessness issues and possible solutions.

Live music in Lethbridge
Perhaps unknown to some, Lethbridge has a thriving live music scene.
Recently I had the pleasure of taking a girl to a dIrtI Speshuls show at The Slice. A Calgarian and live music fan, she didn’t know of any places to go see a show. She was very impressed by my prowess, so I went to the bathroom to high-five myself in the mirror. Except, I was too enthusiastic and broke the mirror. That’s why its missing now.
My point: While I could frequent the brilliantly-designed websites of The Slice, Blarney Stone, etc. or hope that someone Facebook invites me to an event, I’m always looking for an easier way to find out what’s going down.
The other day, I stumbled upon Gord Parrott’s Alberta Events website. Gord, widely known as “THE live music groupie around town,” keeps an up-to-date list of music events for Lethbidge and Ft. McMurray, where he currently resides. If live music is your thing, make sure to bookmark his site.
Free movie night, courtesy of “The LC”
Lethbridge College Alumni Association is holding a free movie night, again. Open to any students or alumni, you have a choice between 7 movies showing at The Movie Mill (I’m seeing Marley & Me Twilight, again). The selection may not be great, but it’s free! For $4, you can also get a medium popcorn and soda pop.
Just tell Kelly I sent you. She’ll give you the hook-up.
