This week, I introduced you to Jenn, who now contributes her talents to Lethbian Love. She and I went out Sunday and traversed the shady underground of Lethbridge. I reminisced about a small bird I once shot (with a camera) and then got sad, drinking my sorrows with a crisp, ice-cold Pilsner. Then I had another. Knowing I couldn’t just stay home drinking, I went to a free movie and showed my “love” to some women…

How could I have missed this?

It seems I needed someone from Saskatchewan to point out that there is a GIANT bottle of Pilsner in The Galt Museum! Saskatchewan, you’re alright…but try and stay in your own province once in a while. I’m just kidding, just stay away from my beer!

Keeping up with the Cuthberts

Jonny’s note: Jenn Prosser, both a student and active community member, is the newest contributor to Lethbian Love.

Lethbridge is a mash up of students and townies. It’s a little like “The Outsiders,” only less hair grease and more church (and I have yet to meet Pony Boy). Students, who make up 12% of the population, are gently tolerated by the rest of city and exist in their own little worlds. Shy and retiring, they live in small clumps, preferring to breed amongst each other. Although they don’t avoid interaction with the “townies,” they do have an annoying habit of assuming everyone under the age of 25 is one of their own.

Berkeley Place, residence buildings and most low-income housing heave with this segment of the Lethbridge population. Rarely venturing outside their invisible boundaries, they prefer to find sustenance in the form of $5 pizzas and Duke wings, and take for granted the endless opportunity for activity at their fingertips.

Sunday is International Women’s Day 2009

This Sunday, show the women in your life how important they are by celebrating International Women’s Day. Across the world, men show their appreciation by giving flowers and thanking their mothers, sisters, daughters and any others who have made an impact on their being.

International Women's Day

Canada’s theme for International Women’s Day 2009 is Strong Leadership. Strong Women. Strong World: Equality.

8 March 2009 marks the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day, and offers a valuable opportunity to celebrate past accomplishments and gains; pay tribute to current efforts; and focus on the challenges that still lie ahead in working towards equality, justice, peace and development for women.

An event titled “Celebrate Our Voice – Women’s Stories” will be held 9AM to 2PM on March 7 at the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization, hosted by the Lethbridge & District YWCA.

More free movies, courtesy the U of L Film Club

If you’re looking for a movie to broaden your horizons, I don’t suggest Battlefied Earth (unless you’re a Scientologist). Rather, look to The University of Lethbridge Film Club. The club screens everything from animation to documentaries twice weekly:

  • Sundays – faculty select the film. Screenings are at 6PM in PE275.
  • Mondays – the Film Club members vote on the film. Screenings are at 7PM at Galileo’s.

Formed earlier this year by Karla Carcamo, the club grew out of a need for artsy students to dress in black and critique films. Response thus far has been great, receiving much attention earlier this semester during “Rush Week” and plenty of additional student feedback.

Informal talks are usually held afterwards at the west side Backstreet, so members can drink away discovering their professor’s personal tastes.

Showings are free and everyone is welcome.

Old Style Pilsner: The Pride of Lethbridge

In Lethbridge, when we’re not mining for coal or wrestling bears, we’re usually drinking an ice-cold Pil. First brewed in Lethbridge in 1926, Old Style Pilsner is a beer that has remained strong in Western Canada since its inception.

Being half Czech, beer has played an important part of my life. In fact, it’s the national drink of the Czech Republic, much like wine is to France. And like wine, there are many varieties from different regions, each with their own recipe. “Pilsener” is a pale lager, developed in the 19th century in the Bohemian city of Plzeň.

My earliest memories of Old Style Pilsner are when I was a youngster, drinking a stubby in my crib. Those were the days when soiling your pants was the norm, not the exception. So here’s the story of my favourite beer as I know it.

Bohemian Waxwing

I took a few photos of a poor, little bird after coming back to work from lunch one day.

Bohemian Waxwing

It was found hurt after flying into a window, so someone put it up in a tree next to the doorway of the college’s Technologies Building. As some lady was performing Reiki on it (crazy?), I decided to grab my camera and take some shots. I can’t believe how close I was able to get!

What a beautiful bird – it was so puffed up! When I came back later, it was gone. Hopefully, it met up with its friends. There were A LOT of them!

It’s been just over a week since I launched the blog. I can’t believe the great response – 1 comment so far! Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to read some of my banter. There’s a lot more to come, so please invite your friends!

Here’s the run-down:

I went deep undercover to reveal the dirty truth behind “Buy a condo, get free tuition.” A few events, including Black History month, Freedom to Read week, The Homelessness Marathon, The World’s Best Commercials and free a movie night, courtesy of Lethbridge College. I rambled about live music, as well as The Slice making top 50 in CBC Radio 3′s Searchlight for “Best Live Music Club in Canada.” Then I got hungry and ate some Tacos. Also mentioned was local graffiti and artists losing their last graffiti-safe area. And I briefly introduced this blog to you and asked some people what they love about Lethbridge.
