Ch-ch-ch-changes…semi-final today at the U of L

Tonight at 4PM I will be moderating the semi-final round of the Changing the World: Student Speakers Challenge. There have been six student speakers so far and of those six three speakers will be presenting again today to be narrowed down to two who will compete against each other in the final.

These student speakers have presented on what they believe can be done to change the world, these presentations have been created by the student themselves and have been done so out of class time. In this time of great change, the world as a whole is looking to bend the status quo and find solutions for the myriad of issues we have presented before us. Education, economic hardships, over consumption and technological evolution all play into our day to day lives now and with a constant barrage of negative messaging being thrown at us we look to those who present something positive.

An incredible opportunity to hear what plans are  in store for the future, as these are the minds that will go on to shape our world and hopefully change it for the better. Come out tonight to Ballroom A in the Students’ Union Building at 4PM to hear Jeff Henry, Trish Silk and Joanna Waszkiewicz present on changing the world, what it means to them.

Sunday shots

Sunday was my grandfather’s birthday, so besides taking some family photos, I took a few shots around their garden. Then I met up  with my friend and former co-worker, Dione. She was fired on sexual harassment charges, but I personally liked having the attention. She has this Nikon and was itching to take some photos with me. So we took to the hills in her Jeep!

Free hockey tickets

Jonny the figure skaterNot many people know this, since it’s something I hold close to my heart. There once was a time when I was an up-and-coming star in the figure skating world. 5 years ago, during a fateful seniors’ competition, I was attempting a big-toe reverse salchow when the tip of my skate broke off and cut me on my knee. It was the injury that ruined my career.

…I’ll never pick up a pair of ice skates again.

Actually, I’m the least athletic person I know. It’s just that I have some tickets  for the U of L Pronghorns hockey teams to get rid of, so I am calling upon my faithful readers! First person to comment gets them. A maximum cash value of 700¢!

Recently on Lethbian Love

It seems the theme for this week was change:

Environmental – I needed a fashion makeover, so I went shopping at Edit, where sustainable shopping and eco-friendliness is at the forefront (don’t forget to come in for a free eco-jot notebook).

Cultural – We listened to some Brocket 99, the fake aboriginal radio station that’s been notorious in Southern Alberta for over 23 years. I also gave you the heads up on some world dance and music, happening tonight, and the U of L film club – so go out and broaden your horizons!

Political – Jenn wrote about Lethbians making a difference, with the upcoming event “Changing the World: Student Speaker’s Challenge,” where students will stand up and say what they believe will change the world.

Personal – I switched shampoos and no more dandruff!

And if you’re still looking for something to do tonight, come out to Henotic for the Endangered Ape, Fox Opera and Hunter/Gatherer show. Have a few beers while you’re there.

Changing the World: Student Speaker’s Challenge.

An idea conceived by several community members and a student in the early days of a crisp, clear and earthly fall. The United States was entering into a black hole of financial mismanagement, an environmental crisis in Alberta’s backyard was receiving international focus and Canada’s democratic process was being called into question. It seemed that the end was near. It still seems like the end is near but with witty political slogans and copycat poster makers, North Americans seem to have calmed down just a little. Which is it a bit of a concern, this right here is not the time to calm down, this is the time to pay close attention to what the future has in store. Changing the world, a difficult concept, how big does change need to be?

Brocket 99: Over 23 years and still notorious

BrocketWhile certainly not the pride of Lethbridge (quite the opposite), Brocket 99 is one of those enigmas that started as an inside joke and ended up being an underground phenomenon. If you’re from Southern Alberta, or have spent any good amount of time here, you’ve probably heard of a phony native radio station called Brocket 99.

An Explosion Of World Dance and Music

If there’s one thing I don’t like, it’s half-naked dancing women. It’s not fair – I’m focusing really hard on my two-step, but they’re all “looking hot” and distracting me! Well, next time I’m gonna wear my mesh t-shirt…then we’ll see who’s bringing sexy back!

So every once in a while, I prefer to just put down some cash, take a seat and watch beautiful women dance for me. It’s a sexy explosion – of world dance and music!

Last year, I had the pleasure of taking in this show. There were plenty of jiggly bits and ethnic beats; definitely an enjoyable time. “Explosion” primarily features belly, latin and other world dances, as performed by the Ammena Dance Company. It also includes eclectic music by artists such as Santana Ondina and more. This year’s special guest is Fiona Malena, from Spain. I don’t know who that is.

The night also includes food and drinks, as well as booths from local vendors during pre-show and intermission. The event starts at 6PM on March 14th and is located at the Yates Memorial Centre. Tickets are $25.

If you’re anything like me and prefer to sit when you watch belly dancers, this show is for you.
